New Juaben Senior High School — Hard Work, Excellence, Legacy
Located on Kassadjan Road in Koforidua, the capital of Ghana's Eastern Region, New Juaben Senior High School, affectionately and popularly known as Njuasco, is one of the most respected, well-established, and beloved public senior high schools in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Guided by its timeless motto "Hard Work," Njuasco has spent over seven decades nurturing the minds, character, and potential of generations of young Ghanaians, producing alumni who have gone on to make their mark across every sector of society. It is not just a school. It is a proud institution with a rich heritage, a strong academic tradition, and a deep commitment to shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
A History Rooted in Vision and Service
The story of New Juaben Senior High School is one of humble beginnings, bold vision, and remarkable growth. The school was originally founded in 1953 by Mr. G. Kwaku Adjei, a native of Asokore, Koforidua, as a private institution known as New Juaben College of Commerce, or NJUACOCO. In 1965, the school became a Government Assisted Secondary School and was renamed New Juaben Secondary Commercial School.
The land on which the school currently stands was graciously donated by Daasebre Nana Kwaku Boateng, the then Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, a gesture that cemented the deep and enduring relationship between the school and the royal family of New Juaben. A personality who was also very instrumental in the building of the structures in the school was Colonel George Minyilah, whose contributions helped lay the physical foundation of what would eventually become one of the most prominent schools in the region.
Over the decades, the school continued to grow and evolve, expanding its programmes, its student population, and its facilities until it was elevated to its current status as New Juaben Senior High School, a fully government-owned public institution under the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education, proudly serving the educational needs of the New Juaben South Municipal District and the broader Eastern Region.
A School for Every Learner
New Juaben Senior High School is a mixed, day and boarding institution, welcoming both male and female students from across the region and beyond. This inclusive approach to education ensures that students from diverse backgrounds, communities, and circumstances all have the opportunity to benefit from the quality of teaching, mentorship, and personal development that Njuasco consistently delivers.
The school operates a three-year Senior High School programme in line with the national curriculum set by the Ghana Education Service, preparing students thoroughly for the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) and equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to succeed in tertiary education and beyond.
Academic Programmes
Njuasco offers a broad and well-rounded selection of academic programmes designed to cater to the diverse interests, strengths, and career aspirations of its students. The programmes offered include General Arts, Business, and Home Economics, each providing students with a strong academic foundation and the relevant skills needed for further education or entry into the world of work.
The General Arts programme is designed for students with a passion for the humanities, languages, social sciences, and the arts. It equips learners with strong analytical, communication, and critical thinking skills that are highly valued across a wide range of professions and academic disciplines.
The Business programme is one of the school's most popular and historically significant offerings, reflecting the institution's deep roots in commercial education dating all the way back to its founding as a college of commerce. Students are trained in accounting, economics, business management, and related disciplines, laying a solid groundwork for careers in finance, commerce, entrepreneurship, and the broader business world.
The Home Economics programme equips students with both practical and theoretical knowledge in food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, and management of the home environment, producing graduates who are well-prepared for careers in hospitality, health, education, and family services, as well as for everyday life.
A Culture of Hard Work and Discipline
At the very heart of everything Njuasco stands for is its motto: Hard Work. These two simple words capture the spirit and ethos of the entire school community, from the teaching staff and administration to every student who walks through its gates. The school firmly believes that there are no shortcuts to meaningful achievement and that consistent effort, determination, and integrity are the foundations upon which lasting success is built.
This culture of discipline and dedication is woven into the daily life of the school, reflected in the high standards expected of students both inside and outside the classroom, the commitment of teachers to delivering quality instruction, and the school's ongoing efforts to provide an environment where every student can discover their potential and rise to meet it.
Student Life and Co-Curricular Activities
Life at Njuasco extends well beyond the classroom. The school places great importance on the holistic development of its students, recognising that true education must nurture the whole person and not just the academic mind. Students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities that develop their talents, build their confidence, foster teamwork, and instil a sense of civic responsibility and community spirit.
From sports and athletics to debating, cultural activities, and student leadership programmes, Njuasco provides its students with a vibrant and enriching school life that complements their academic work and prepares them for the full range of challenges and opportunities that life beyond school will bring.
A Legacy That Endures
For over seven decades, New Juaben Senior High School has been a pillar of educational excellence in Koforidua and the Eastern Region. The school's alumni are spread across Ghana and the world, contributing meaningfully to the fields of business, education, public service, healthcare, law, engineering, and the arts. They carry with them the values, the discipline, and the pride that Njuasco instilled in them, and many return to give back to the institution that gave them their start.
As the school continues to grow and evolve in response to the changing needs of its students and the demands of a rapidly changing world, it remains firmly grounded in the values and traditions that have defined it since 1953. The commitment to hard work, academic excellence, and the wholesome development of every student remains as strong today as it was when Mr. G. Kwaku Adjei first opened the doors of New Juaben College of Commerce all those years ago.
New Juaben Senior High School, Njuasco, is not just a place of learning. It is a community, a family, and a legacy. And its best days are still ahead.
