About this department

The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development within the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly assists in formulating and implementing social welfare and community development policies within the framework of national policy. It aims to integrate vulnerable, disadvantaged, and marginalized persons into mainstream development within the municipality.

Our objectives

The department exists to promote and protect the welfare of vulnerable groups including persons with disabilities, children, the aged, and the poor within the municipality. It seeks to facilitate community development by mobilising available human and material resources to improve the living standards of individuals, families, and communities across the municipality.

Roles & functions

The department facilitates community-based rehabilitation of persons with disabilities and implements the 3% Common Fund allocated for PWDs. It coordinates the implementation of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme and provides hospital welfare services and assistance to the aged. The department registers and supervises non-governmental organisations operating within the municipality and promotes the rights and protection of children including the elimination of child labour. It organises community development programmes, mobilises communal labour for self-help projects, and provides vocational and entrepreneurial training for women and the deprived. The department also assists the Assembly in formulating social welfare policies, represents the Assembly on social and community development matters, and compiles reports to support planning and decision-making.
