Geographic Location

The New Juaben South Municipal Assembly (NJSMA) is an urban administrative district strategically located in the central part of Ghana's Eastern Region, covering a precise land size of 60 square kilometers that constitutes about 0.31% of the total regional landmass [2]. Headquartered in the regional capital of Koforidua at coordinates 6°5′38.4″N 0°15′32.4″W, this compact territory was officially established following the division of the old New Juaben Municipal District under Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2301 in 2017 [2]. Geographically, the municipality is situated between latitudes 6° 0' N and 7° 0' N, and longitudes 1° 30' W and 0° 30' E. It shares immediate administrative boundaries with the New Juaben North Municipal Assembly to the north, the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly to the east, the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly to the south-east, and the Suhum Municipal Assembly to the west. Topographically, the land features a varied layout with an average elevation of 208 meters above sea level, dropping to 63 meters in low-lying valleys and peaking at 483 meters along its mountain borders, dominated by the culturally significant Obuo Tabri Mountain. This terrain heavily influences urban drainage, as the central plains of Koforidua rest at 219 meters, naturally collecting runoff from the surrounding Akuapem ridge system. To efficiently govern these 60 square kilometers, the land is decentralized into 8 Zonal Councils, 34 Electoral Areas, and 70 Unit Committees that drive local development and grass-roots structural planning.
