About this department

The Environmental Health and Sanitation Department of the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly has the mandate to ensure that all factors which tend to have adverse effects on human health in the environment are brought under control. It exists to assess, correct, control, and prevent those environmental factors that can adversely affect the health of both present and future generations within the municipality.

Our objectives

The department exists to promote public health and prevent disease by reducing environmental hazards across the municipality. It seeks to ensure proper management of solid and liquid waste, maintain sanitation standards in all public spaces, and enforce environmental health laws and regulations within the municipality.

Roles & functions

The department manages the collection, treatment, and disposal of solid waste and supervises the cleaning of drains, streets, markets, car parks, and open spaces across the municipality. It inspects premises and food establishments for compliance with sanitation regulations and conducts health promotion and education campaigns in communities and institutions. The department manages sanitation in markets, public places, and hospitality facilities, promotes the use of household and institutional toilets, and monitors burial grounds and the disposal of the dead. It vets building plans for compliance with environmental sanitation standards, maintains a database on all premises of environmental health importance, and enforces sanitation bye-laws. The department also liaises with relevant agencies on complex sanitation challenges requiring inter-sectoral collaboration and reports outcomes and problems to the Assembly for appropriate action.
